TWI Certification Ltd (TWI CL) and German certification body DVS ZERT GmbH have joined forces to support manufacturers of steel and aluminum structures in the UK, Germany and Europe. Those wishing to place their products on the UK market will have the opportunity to mark their products with the UKCA or CE/CE(UK)NI mark, while UK manufacturers wishing to export to Germany and/or Europe and require EU FPC certification to CE mark their products can do so through this partnership agreement.
CE marking allows companies to sell their products in European Economic Area (EEA) countries by demonstrating that their products meet the requirements of relevant European product directives and harmonized performance and safety standards. CE marking is mandatory for most types of products sold in Europe and must be affixed to the surface or packaging.
In the UK, the UKCA marking will replace the traditional CE marking from January 1, 2022. Affected products that previously required CE marking by a Notified Body will then have to be marked with the UKCA marking by a UK Approved Body. CE marking will no longer be recognized for most products after January 1, 2022. An extended transition period has been granted for marine equipment, medical devices and IVDs.
In order to affix a UKCA, CE (UKNI) or CE marking to their construction products, manufacturers must undergo factory production control (FPC) conformity assessment. This allows them to demonstrate that their products are manufactured using designs, processes and procedures that meet the quality specifications of EN 1090-1.
EN 1090-1 is the harmonized supporting standard that specifies the requirements for conformity assessment of steel and aluminum structures. It is the standard to which TWI CL's CAESAS (Conformity Assessment of the Execution of Steel and Aluminium Structures) program was established.
TWI CL is a company of the TWI Group and was established in 1993 to provide the independence and impartiality required for certification to international standards. DVS ZERT GmbH was established in 1994 and has extensive experience in the certification of management systems, products and welding quality and factory production control requirements.
Emma Freckingham, head of corporate certification at TWI CL, said, "We are delighted with this new partnership with DVS ZERT GmbH, which means that current and future customers of both our companies, whose business involves exporting steel and aluminum structures for the UK or European market, will now have access to the required certification directly through their current certification body."
Martin Lehmann, Managing Director of DVS ZERT GmbH, said, "We are delighted to have reached this agreement with our colleagues at TWI CL, and we have already received numerous requests from our customers for the UKCA mark. The partnership between TWI CL and DVS ZERT reflects our complementary expertise, so we believe it is an excellent model for both our companies and their clients," he added.
TWI CL is accredited by UKAS to international standards for the certification of individuals (ISO/IEC 17024) and companies for products, processes and services (ISO/IEC 17065). Conformity assessment of structural steel products is harmonized with Regulation (EU) No. 305/2011 through UK Statutory Instrument (SI) 2020 No. 1359, under which TWI CL is an approved body for the SI (AB 2400). TWI CL performs assessment and certification of manufacturers to EN 1090-1 under its CAESAS program.
